Welcome to my next segment in my how to ride a motorcycle series. In this part, I will be teaching you how to downshift on a motorcycle.

I've gotten a lot of questions about this since I started vlogging. Its a very commonly asked question for a technique that everyone who rides should learn. With just some consistent practice you'll have this basic skill down in no time!

As you might guess, downshifting is the technique of shifting down. This is commonly used to help slow down a motorcycle or to put it in a lower gear so that the bike is in its power band and can accelerate more quickly. To down shift on a motorcycle, follow these basic steps, which are very similar to basic shifting:

1. Pull in the clutch as you do a slight roll off of the throttle to take load off the engine.
2. Do a quick "blip" of the throttle. i.e. roll on to the throttle just slightly so that the revs go up. This will be how you "rev match" and get the engine spinning at the right speed to be reengaged with the wheel. Controlling the amount you rev the engine will help you make smoother downshifts as you learn how much throttle is needed.
3. Shift down into a lower gear.
4. Let out the clutch. The slower you let it out, the more margin of error you can handle for rev matching. The better you rev match, the quicker you can let out the clutch without jerking the bike.
