Depending how long you've been riding, you may or may not have heard of clutchless shifting yet. Just like the name suggests, this is shifting without using the clutch at all. When you first hear about it, you may wonder how that's possible, since you aren't disengaging the transmission from the engine.
After doing some research, you may then see the HUGE amount of discussion around this topic and whether clutchless shifting is okay to do. So is it? Well, if done correctly, yes, clutchless shifting is okay.
This is more suited for spirited riding when you're accelerating quickly. You are less likely to damage the bike under these circumstances than when just casually riding (which doesn't warrant clutchless shifting at all). To do a clutchless shift, follow the steps below:
1. "Preload" the shifter. i.e. Put a small amount of pressure on the shift lever as if you're going to shift without actually shifting to the next gear.
2. Roll off the throttle to take the load off of the engine, this will allow the transmission to accept a clutchless shift.
3. Fully pull on the shift lever to upshift.
4. Quickly get back on the throttle to get the engine up to speed with the wheel.
It takes practice to get this right. The smoother you get, the better it will be. Done correctly and as smooth as possible, this will not damage your bike at all and allow for much quicker shifts and smoother acceleration.
